Few TV detectives have suffered as much trauma as Julien Baptiste. But the dogged French sleuth, played by Tchéky Karyo, will be put through the wringer like never before as BBC1 crime thriller Baptiste returns for a twist-filled second – and final – series.

During his relentless quests to find lost loved ones, the retired cop turned-private investigator, who first appeared in acclaimed drama The Missing, has battled a brain tumor, sustained an injury that has left him with a limp and discovered his son was a killer.

Now, the new six-part run, penned again by Liar creators Harry and Jack Williams, finds Baptiste grieving following another family tragedy and refusing to open up to worried wife Celia (The Pembrokeshire Murders’ Anastasia Hille).

However, work soon proves a distraction, and after he learns that the husband and sons of Emma Chambers, the British Ambassador to Hungary, have disappeared while on holiday with Emma in the Hungarian mountains, he offers to help.

When time jumps forward to the present day, however, what has led both Baptiste and Emma (played by Killing Eve favorite Fiona Shaw) into even deeper emotional turmoil?
