Sharon Gless loves her occasional guest role as pioneering American neurosurgeon Zsa Zsa Harper-Jenkinson in Casualty – and her appearances have become something of an event for fans of the ever-popular BBC1 medical drama.

This Saturday, Sharon begins her third stint as Zsa Zsa appears via video link when her former protégé, Dylan Keogh (William Beck), calls her for help.

And next week, she sashays back on to the wards to perform dangerous brain-tumour surgery on Luka, the son of nurse Faith Cadogan and paramedic Lev Malinovsky.

‘I always have fun when I’m filming with the Casualty cast and crew in Wales,’ enthuses the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actor, 76, when TV Times calls her at her Florida home for a chat. ‘I’m thrilled I’ve been invited back!’
