All-Knighter…
Four films; three Bruce Waynes; two directors; one Alfred. Thirty years since Michael Keaton sent a hoodlum packing with the apparently straightforward declaration, “I’m Batman,” the 4K re-release of the four ’80s/’90s Batflicks is a reminder that things are never that simple in Hollywood.
Batman (HHHH, 1989) remains a landmark in blockbusting, built from the visionary brio of Tim Burton. The brief was to consign memories of the campy ’60s TV show to oblivion… but not that much. So, we get a film defined by Burton’s playfully macabre aesthetic, especially strong in its art direction and pre-CGI practical FX, but whose fight scenes still feel like they deserve cartoon BIFF! BANG! POW! captions.
