If in doubt, consider how much competitive claim has been laid to That Song. Before Houston monopolised 1992’s summer with ‘I Will Always Love You’, Dolly Parton wrote the song and made it a hit. Punk-country baritone John Doe also sings it in the film, though his soundtrack-album absence is rarely noted. Innumerable karaoke crapshoots have since tarnished it too, though Houston’s hold remains untouchable.
