The outdoor exhibition Rock ’n’ Roll Billboards of The Sunset Strip by photographer Robert Landau is catching eyes at the West Hollywood municipal parking lot at 8775 Sunset Blvd.—formerly Tower Records’ overflow lot. Presented by the City of West Hollywood through WeHo Arts, the installation is part of There’s Something Happening Here…
On The Sunset Strip, a series of events and exhibits marking the 50th anniversary of the Sunset Strip riots. Landau’s photographs— enlarged to 8 feet high by 13 feet wide—capture the era from 1967 to 1980, when truly larger-than-life record company billboards turned the Strip into the world’s largest drive-through art gallery. The very first one was for the Doors, now-classic ’67 self-titled debut album—the trend caught on, and these pop-culture urban artworks became a phenomenon.
