It’s that time of year again, as the famous festival of fun returns for what is arguably the most highly anticipated social event in the Dubai calendar. Whether you’re a rugby fan or not there’s plenty to keep you entertained, from food, music, prizes and, of course, fancy dress. Here’s all you need ahead of the three-day festival.
History Of Dubai Sevens
It's one of the most highly anticipated events of the year, and if this is your first taste of the Dubai Rugby Sevens, it may all seem a little daunting – but fear not, we’ve got you covered. Firstly, you don’t need to be a rugby fan, or even know the slightest thing about the sport to have a good time here. The tournament began in 1970 and has become somewhat of an institution, with fans coming from all around the world to be a part of what is essentially a three-day festival of fun. It’s now the longest running sporting event in the Middle East and attracts around 10,000 fans every year, (so it’s no wonder it won Dubai’s Favourite Sporting Event at our What’s On Awards for 15 of the last 16 years). Where does all this fun take place you ask? At the famous Sevens Stadium, which, we won’t lie, is pretty far away, but we’ll get to that shortly. The stadium is purpose-built for the Rugby Sevens and can be configured to host crowds of over 50,000 people. The venue also hosts other sports all year round thanks to its six cricket ovals, eight football pitches, four netball courts, four tennis courts and a basketball court. If you want to impress your friends make sure you let them know that South Africa retained their Dubai Sevens crown last year when they won 2017’s competition by beating New Zealand 24-12 in the final. Incidentally, England has finished third in the last two years.
WHERE TO GET FANCY DRESS
Dressing up is part of the fun, and if you’re worried about looking silly, trust us when we say you’ll look more out of place if you don’t go in a costume
