Organ Donor Miracle My Son's Legacy Lives On In Anthony

Caterina was both nervous and excited to meet the man who was given a second chance at life with her son’s organs.

David Cassai was a son any mother would be proud of. “He was kind and he was generous, and people were drawn to him,” his broken-hearted mum Caterina Politi says.

On New Year’s Eve 2012 David and his friends were set on by three thugs in Rye, Victoria. David, 22, was coward-punched and struck his head. There was no hope and doctors asked Caterina if she would donate David’s organs.

“I didn’t hesitate,” she says. “I said I would. I knew my son. I knew it’s what he’d want.”

SAVED BY DAVID

Now, in an extraordinary development, the Melbourne mother has met a man who was saved by David’s gift of life after writing about the organ donation on David’s Facebook tribute page. The next day she received a message from Robyn Vesty from Mathoura in the NSW Riverina. “Robyn said she thought her son Anthony had received David’s pancreas and left kidney,” she says. “We compared dates and confirmed it. I no longer had David but I was happy another mother didn’t have to grieve for her son like I do.”
