The two countries previously disagreed on the height of the mountain, which is on the border between them. But separate expeditions by land surveyors of China and Nepal have now confirmed the height at 8 848,86 metres.
Before, Nepal used a measurement from 1954, according to which the mountain is 8 848m high – but that included the snow on the peak.
In 2005, China did its own measurement, concluding that the height of the mountain (without snow) is 8 844,43m – in other words 3,57m lower than the 1954 estimate.
