The film’s title character is an autistic and non-verbal young girl, played by Maddie Ziegler. After her grandmother passes away, Music’s free-spirited, estranged half-sister Zu (Kate Hudson), who is also a recovering addict, becomes her guardian.
The sisters must learn to trust and love each other through the challenges they face. The film also stars Leslie Odom Jr and Héctor Elizondo.
What inspired you to make a film about someone who has autism?
It sort of fell into my brain. It took me about 12 years to develop the screenplay, but after meeting Stevie [a 16-year-old she met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting], who was non-verbal and who the character of Music is based on, I began to trust myself.
I had the ability to represent one person on the spectrum and it felt like a message, like something I needed to do.
