This Is Your Skin On Hormones
Your period

days 1 through 5

A typical 28(ish)-day cycle starts with menstruation. Low levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone prompt the lining of your uterus to shed (cue: bleeding). And so begins this v fun roller-coaster ride.

Hormone hack

Your skin is likely red and sensitive rn, thanks to the above and a surge in blood flow to your capillaries. Also: extra prostaglandin, a hormone-like compound that decreases pain tolerance, explains derm Joshua Zeichner, MD. Use a gentle cleanser (Garnier’s micellar water has no irritating sulfates or fragrance) and incorporate a soothing mist into your routine (Lancôme’s is made with calming rose water).

Follicular phase

days 6 through 12
