The Oyster Perpetual Datejust is certainly one of Rolex’s most iconic timepiece, it is also a masterpiece of horological science — a synthesis of all that has been achieved up to the present day. It contains the numerous accomplishments and milestones that mark the watchmaking world: A certified chronometer movement, a self-winding mechanism and a waterproof case, complemented by a date display in a special window on the dial.
The very first Datejust was released in 1945 on the occasion of Rolex’s 40th anniversary. It was in yellow gold, expressing harmonious elegance and perfectly embodying what a classic watch should be. In 1957, the Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust, with a diameter of 26mm was released, with the same attributes of the original model.
Today, 78 years later, it is clearer than ever that the Datejust has stood the test of time, spanning eras without ever losing its modern touch. Reflecting the aspirations of the modern world, the Datejust has naturally become the watch of our dates with destiny. But what really makes the Datejust a watchmaking icon is the way it can be used as a canvas to showcase several emblematic Rolex innovations, like its dialmaking expertise, making it an enduring symbol of reinvention. This has brought about the many Datejust styles with varied aesthetic options that make it a timepiece that perfectly adapts to the personality of its wearer. Here, we look at the key features of the Datejust.
