Dress is an integral part of our communication about who we are, what we are and what we do.
It tells others how we see ourselves and how we think they should view us--and it can define our crediblity and professionalism. But we’ve come a long way from the 1980s’ stereotype of the power suit, big shoulders and bigger hair. If the women spoke to are anything to go by, corporate or business dress today is more about expressing who you are within a context that is appropriate for your industry. It’s harder for someone in a senior banking role to rock up to work in a funky outfit than it might be for someone working in the creative sector. It seems women in management aren’t afraid to dress with an edge and the four we interviewed believe you can’t go wrong if you dress to suit your shape, your personality and your role.

If you had to describe yourself and your personal style in six to ten words, could you do it? Would you possibly say you are ‘elegant, fun-loving, serious, practical, ambitious, sensual, calm’ or a ‘gypsy’? This fascinating exercise is the basis for getting to know yourself so that you can begin to put your unique personal look together and I always do it with clients and group workshops before I go into anything else. The reason is that before we can know how we want to dress or how we want to look, we have to know who we are.
