Be it practical and efficient, or quirky and entertaining, we are seeing more hybrid salons in Singapore these days—hair and nails, hair and coffee, hair and cocktails and even hair and art! Wondering what it takes to manage a hybrid? We gained some insights from founders of local and foreign hybrid salons.
DEBARGE (SALON/CAFÉ)
AUSTRALIA FOUNDED BY PAUL AND MARIE RICUPITO
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN A HYBRID SALON?
We found a large space that was too large for just a salon. Since we have always had a passion for great food and coffee, we thought the concept could work.
WHAT WAS YOUR AIM WHEN YOU OPENED THE SALON?
Our goal was to create a vibrant and buzzing space where people can connect and socialise as well as get first class hair services.
DO YOU THINK HYBRID SALONS ARE HERE TO STAY IN THE HAIR INDUSTRY?
Yes, I believe they are here to stay. I think it’s like any business; if done well it can succeed and thrive no matter what.
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU HAVE FACED SINCE YOU OPENED THE HYBRID SALON?
One of the toughest issues we initially faced was being one of the first hybrid salons of its kind (hair and café). Getting clients and new customers to have confidence in the business model was our biggest initial hurdle. Some of them couldn’t understand food and hair in the same space.
HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THOSE CHALLENGES?
Great customer service from day one and continual staff training and education. This helped us gain the confidence of every person walking in and ensured they left positive contented with their experience. They would then let their friends and family know about their great experience and we were able to gain new customers
WHAT ARE SOME MILESTONE ACHIEVEMENTS?
Our biggest achievement is winning Australian Salon Team of The Year at the 2015 Australian Hair Industry Awards.

Summer Hair Care
Just as the sun damages your skin, it can damage your hair too. Saltwater and chlorine also take a toll on our tresses. A few weeks into summer, hair that was once shiny and easily managed looks and feels fried. Hair damage is most obvious when we see colourtreated hair becoming faded, bleached, and brassy. Even hair that isn't coloured will suffer from suninduced stress. Those UV rays dry out hair and rough up the normally smooth cuticle of the hair shaft.
Why Is Your Hair Dry?
Do you dream of having the luxurious, silky hair of a shampoo model instead of dry hair? Understanding the root cause of dry hair and taking action may be all you need to get the locks you long for.
Thinning Hair Tips
Many factors can trigger thinning hair. Possible triggers include medical conditions, stress, lifestyle factors — such as the food you eat — even genes can play a role. Hair will usually grow back once the cause is addressed. Here are some tips that can help care for thinning hair.

The Singaporean Hair Dressing Industry
I’ve always liked to link the food and beverages industry to the hair industry as they both have very humble beginnings, both driven by passionate people and both employ people from all skill levels. However, the general population has a vastly different perception, with the main distinction that they eat 2-3 times a day while only visiting a salon once a month, or even once a year, they have very little interest in the hair industry.
