As a mark of International Women’s Day celebration, Rachna Virdi talks to the best women hairstylists in the industry on what makes them truly unstoppable.

Q Your idea of hairstyling in a male-dominated industry.

A I’m not sure that it is a male-dominated industry! In my team alone we have a ratio of about 70:30 or 60:40 women to men. There are many more women than men in the hair industry.

Q Your opinion on gender stereotypes.

A I am a firm believer of the saying ‘live and let live’. I feel that our industry is a place where everyone is accepted for whoever it is. That’s a big part of why I love what I do, as there’s a place here for everyone. The opportunities are equal; it’s about working hard, and has nothing to do with gender.

Q Any challenges faced, being a woman?

A ‘No challenges faced’ specific to being a woman in relation to my work.

Q Your beliefs and responsibilities.

A This quote by Jane Goodall explains it all: “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference. And you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

Q Your advice/inspiration.

A You are only as good as the last haircut you did!

Q Who/what has influenced you?

A My mum Ann Bhabani, though I hate to sound clichéd. She is genuinely one of the most balanced, non-judgemental people I have had the pleasure of knowing. That quality is so rare. I admire it so much.
