Jewellery designer, Hanut Singh, on his glorious lineage and making bridal legacies.
As a scion of the Kapur thala royal family, Hanut Singh, grew up surrounded by jewels that most of us have only read about in royal memoirs. His great-grandfather, Maharaja Jagatjit Singh, was a connoisseur who was known to carry suitcases filled with gemstones to commission jewellery to European brands like Cartier, Boucheron, and Van Cleef & Arpels. Meanwhile, his glamorous grandmother, Rani Sita Devi of Kapurthala or Princess Karam was an aesthete and muse to artists like Cecil Beaton and Man Ray.
With an early introduction to the world of gems, it’s no wonder that Singh paved his path in pavé. “I’ve always grown up around beautiful jewellery, beautiful stones, and lovely settings. It’s been my education,” explains the jewellery designer. “Everybody in my family shares a love and passion for jewellery, I’m the only one who designs it,” he quips. A stint in fashion journalism later, Singh began by designing a capsule collection, Frutti di Mare or Fruits of the Sea where he worked with abalone shells, pearls, and corals. Growing organically from that, Singh’s art-deco inspired jewellery soon gained favour from stars like Beyonce, Katy Perry, Naomi Campbell, and the Olsen twins.
