After three decades in fashion, Suneet Varma tells us about his journey through time and how Aishwarya Nair is the perfect muse.

Creator of all things artistically maximal, a perfectionist at heart, and a fashion lover by all means—designer Suneet Varma is a pioneer when it comes to Indian couture. After three decades in the industry, today he is one of the most well-known Indian designers in the country and the world. The first question that comes to mind: how does he do it? How does he keep himself constantly inspired? And most importantly, how does it feel to be a veteran? He coolly explains how time is just an aspect and he is glad to be doing what he loves the most.‘‘I know it should feel special but it doesn’t feel like 30 years. I get to work with wonderful, young people, produce collection after collection, and do interesting collaborations. I have always believed that fashion is the politest way of talking about sex. And that is something that constantly inspires me. But I still enjoy what I do and that is the true test of a lasting career. I hope to keep doing this for the next 30 years.’’

He started his career with fashion’s biggest legend, Yves Saint Laurent. ‘‘I still remember that time he was in his seventies! Through him I got to meet so many stalwarts of the design world. I would attend fashion weeks in Paris. I even worked on the wedding dress for the Duchess of York with him. We pinned the muslin fit together! That’s how lucky and fortunate I have been,’’ he reminisces.
