By restoring The Royal Opera House, Mumbai, the Maharanisaheb Kumud Kumari of Gondal is keeping history alive
“I USED TO WATCH MOVIES HERE,” says Her Highness, Maharanisaheba Kumud Kumari of Gondal, seated on one of the red velvet box seats at The Royal Opera House, Mumbai. “I’ve seen Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), and a few more films. Even then this place was not as elaborate and well-restored as it is now.”
She is referring to details such as the gilded Corinthian columns, elegant glass and crystal chandeliers, and expansive proscenium stage that are not just a dream for performers and audiences, but have also won The Royal Opera House the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2017.
