Unique to Chanel for 17 years, the extraordinary Métiers d’Art collections are set to serve as a rich reminder of the house’s late, great creative director
In the space where the orbs of fashion and art collide lies the essence of Chanel’s Métiers d’Art. Established in 2002 by the inimitable Karl Lagerfeld, these annual presentations— which sit outside the standard ready-to-wear and couture show schedule—pay tribute to the detail-driven craftsmanship so integral to the work of the house. This virtuosic display from 27 French and broader European artisan partners acquired and supported by Chanel— embroiderers, costume jewellers, fabric pleaters, milliners, glove makers and more—results in an artful array of demi-couture looks that fuse traditional workmanship with modern design. But make no mistake, though the techniques and processes are time honoured and speak to the heritage of each atelier, the collections are all about innovation and cutting-edge craftsmanship, echoing the original modus operandi of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel herself.
