Great Britain is well known for many things: pageantry, high tea and royalty. But when it comes to sartorial style, there is no other brand that better personifies the British psyche than Burberry.
Established in 1856 when a 21-year-old Thomas Burberry opened his store in Hampshire, England, Burberry’s roots run deep in stylish, yet highly functional outdoor wear. Case in point: it was Burberry that developed the now-famous gabardine, a breathable yet completely waterproof fabric.
Its signature tartan is so distinct it has become something of an international status symbol, and the brand has long-standing Royal Warrants from both Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles. But since its shift from football fan favourite to indisputable high-fashion player – much of it guided by Christopher Bailey, the brand’s maverick creative director from 2014 to 2018 – Burberry flows through not just British fashion but global popular culture.
