At a friend’s wedding a few months ago, the bridal party was being assigned T-shirts. As a friend of both the bride and the groom, I asked for mine to say ‘Main Man’. My spitfire erstwhile college roommate quickly corrected my mistake of conforming to the patriarchy—and reminded me that ‘Main Girl’ or just ‘Main’ should suffice. Sisterhood, as you may have experienced, is an odd mix of comfort, bonding over shared horrors, meme exchanges but mostly the ability to trust and accept without judgement. Forgive the clichés, but within my own tangled web of friendships lie many strong, opinionated women who at the dawn of their weddings turn into creatures that are far from rational. As a self-confessed serial-bridesmaid over the past few years, I have learnt my lessons on how to rediscover your friend in a bride (with some lessons shamelessly borrowed from popular culture, of course). Here’s my evolving playbook on how-to-be-a-perfect-bridesmaid:
