When considering what to wear and what to pack for a day on the lake in cold temperatures, there are several factors to consider. When people refer to being outside as “out in the elements,” the elements are exactly for what we are preparing. The elements include temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, precipitation and wind.
Proper layering systems are the best way to mitigate adverse elements. Typically, layering systems are built from the inside out. The layer next to your skin is crucial to maintaining body heat and managing moisture. Typically known as the base layer, this is where you start your system.
There are two common types of base layer: merino wool and synthetic. Each material has its pros and cons, and situationally, one will be better than the other. Cotton has no place in any layering system. The other materials are far superior in every facet of moisture and temperature regulation. Since we are talking cold weather fishing, merino wool is where you should be looking to fill that first layer. Merino is a hearty wool that is excellent at maintaining body temperature. It is mildly heavier than synthetic, but that is reflected by its ability to keep you warmer.
