A recent article in Fishing News, the weekly industry newspaper for the commercial fishing industry, did its best to call into question the economic value of recreational sea angling by claiming it was ‘grossly overestimated’. In the end, due to a combination of ignorance, bad journalism and weak editorial standards, it fell flat on its face because not only were we able to justify in a letter published the following week in Fishing News, the figures used about how much money sea angling is worth to the economy (£2.1bn total annual spend in England) but a new report was published a few days later helping us to prove that sea angling’s value is actually vastly underestimated!
