Su-33 Flanker–D
Kit No: No.01
Scale: 1/48
Type: Injection Moulded Plastic
Manufacturer: Minibase www.albionalloys.com
The Su-33 has a reputation that stretches far beyond the surprisingly small production run of twenty-four aircraft. An evolution of the formidable Su-27, the Su-33 features a strengthened undercarriage and airframe structure as well as canard wings, folding main wings and stabilators, along with increased power from its twin AL-31F afterburning turbofan engines to make the aircraft suitable for carrier operation. Intended as an air superiority asset, the Su-33 makes for an attractive modelling subject.
The box Minibase supply is packed full of parts, which when removed proved to be a Tetris champion’s challenge to fit back in. I look at this as encouragement to start assembling the kit, which comprises a total of twenty-five grey and one clear injected sprue. This is joined by three sheets of photoetched parts, some of which are so small they defy your vision. Finally, three decal sheets complete the package, which also contains a print of the cover art with a cartoon on the opposite side.
