Yes. There were major disruptions including flight cancellations restricting air-freight capacity, refrigerated containers being held at ports and not returned to global circulation, labour shortages and slow customs clearance.
The Australian Government has launched the International Freight Assistance Mechanism to re-establish airfreight to high-end protein markets to countries like Singapore. Australia’s red meat and livestock industry welcomed the $110 million dollar promise by the Australian government to fly Aussie red meat first-class to customers around the world. This ensured the continuity and affordability of air export capacity to valued and high-end export markets in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and the UAE.
How did Australian beef producers cope with the challenges of importing food amid the outbreak?
It has been a very challenging time for Australian Red Meat Producers. The unprecedented and unpredictable nature of Covid-19 makes it very difficult to report on the complete range of impacts of the Australian red meat and livestock industry in an accurate and timely manner. The crisis has escalated across the world and will continue to disrupt the consumption of Australian red meat domestically and around the globe presenting many issues for Australian producers. Disruption to the Australian Red Meat industry has been created by situations such as panic buying and airfreight disruptions, which have significantly affected managing supplies and inventories. Importers report a spike in lower cuts, minces and chuck.

To get a sense of Chef Aeron Choo’s work ethic as well as personality, we first have to tell the story of meeting her for the first time in her restaurant, Kappou Japanese Sushi Tapas Bar at Fortune Center. She’s working with her kitchen team, scrutinising the ingredients she has prepared, making sure that the slices of tuna she has made is up to scratch, prepping and discarding elements that she is dissatisfied with that don’t work with the dishes. Then, she pulls out a 1.7kg spiny lobster, fresh from the tank, and very much alive. When the lobster is clearly flailing from being yanked out of the tank it had been swimming in, she takes time to stroke, pet the lobster and whisper sweet nothings to calm the creature down.
