MANY years ago, a lady asked me why her beetroot were so miserable. Apparently, she’d grown really nice beets in the past, but now she wondered whether her soil was infected or impoverished as her crops were small and spindly, with many bolted. I asked how large she wanted her beets and she replied: “Like tennis balls!”
