DR RIEKIE SMIT takes us through the facts (not just the rules) of why a face-to-face consultation remains irreplaceable.
With today’s advanced world of internet shopping, Google advice (Dr Google), home remedies on Pinterest and YouTube showing you how to even perform a heart transplant; do you still need to see a doctor for your anti-ageing and beauty needs?
The answer seems rather simple when you watch programmes such as Botched, where you see what happens to those trying cheaper alternatives while going for advanced procedures with nonmedical persons. In the majority of these cases, people end up paying more to fix the problem then they would have paid, should they have chosen the correct route of having a procedure done by a qualified registered physician.
Most people (with or without money) usually want to look good, younger or more attractive, and this is the major driving force to opt for cheaper alternatives. Unfortunately, it may end up disastrous or cost more than what you bargained for.
Many may also argue that they have done a lot of research – that they know exactly what products or treatments will work for them, and even take it into their own hands. However, this research is 99% of the time obtained from Dr Google, who also claims that mermaids exist!
Rules and regulations
In South Africa our regulations with regard to medical procedures and medical products are very strict in order to protect the public. This is also why we do not have a local TV programme such as Botched, because South Africa is known to enforce probably among the strictest medical laws.
