Buzzing, biting, blood-sucking bugs are more than a nuisance – they can make you sick. If you have an inflammatory form of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, or are taking drugs that suppress the immune system, you may be at increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as the Zika, chikungunya or West Nile viruses. Jonathan R. Day, PhD, professor of medical entomology at the University of Florida, Vero Beach, offers this advice to protect yourself as the weather gets warmer and bugs start biting.
