I’VE BEEN IN THE FIELD OF nutrition for well over a decade now, and the question I’m asked most often is “What would be the one food you would take to a desert island?” My answer: sunflower seeds. Sunflower seeds aren’t the featured ingredient this month – even though they are delicious powerhouses of minerals and protein – rather, it’s the actual seeds I’m after. With the seeds and a little soil, I could grow a lifetime supply of sunflower sprouts – a food that I’m pretty sure I could live on healthfully for many, many moons on that desert island.
