When you have diabetes, you may be focused on managing your blood sugar levels. But, it’s important to keep your heart healthy as well. Over time, high blood glucose levels can damage your blood vessels and the nerves that control them. People living with diabetes have an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, explains Clyde Yancy, MD, Chief of Cardiology at Northwestern University and a spokesperson for the American Heart Association. “Even when you have diabetes, heart diseases aren’t inevitable, and there’s a lot you can do to lower your odds,” says Yancy. Focus on these four areas for a healthier heart.
