If you're a fan of float tanks or saunas, there's reason to rejoice! They're just a couple of the once-popular therapies experiencing a revival.

Did you or your mother try floating in the ‘80s? Well, you might have been onto a good thing. It’s one of the many born-again alternative therapies currently making a comeback.

Here, we discover the benefits of these therapies and what you need to know before you try them.

FLOATATION THERAPY

What to expect

Craving complete silence and time to simply relax? Then ‘floating’ may appeal. Invented in the 1950s, in this therapy you step inside a private large enclosed bathtub containing 400kg of mineral-rich Epsom salts. The water is so dense that you float. “The tanks are soundproof and pitch black in order to detach you from any sensory input and promote relaxation,” explains Austin Coons from Forever Floating Health Spa in Sydney. If you feel claustrophobic you can leave the lid open.

The more sessions you do, the better, says Coons. “Regulars see the best results when they visit at least once a month.”

The benefits

  • Relieves stress
  • Promotes creativity
  • Aids muscle recovery
  • Relieves joint pain
  • Softens skin
  • Gives a feeling of weightlessness

A single session starts at $49 for 75 minutes. Find a location near you at floatationlocations. com/category/australia/.
