THE FIRST TIME marine biologist and model Laura Wells experienced eco-despair was on a trip to Hawaii. “We were on this stunning beach watching sea turtles forage, and just two metres from the shore the sand was covered in plastic,” says the 32-year-old from Sydney’s beachside Coogee. “I started to wonder if what I’m doing [to protect our oceans] even matters.” Despite these moments of self-doubt, Wells isn’t one to back down from a fight. At 19, modelling internationally, she experienced body shaming first-hand. The antidote? Self-acceptance. “It doesn’t matter if I have big thighs. I have come to love my body for what it does. I can swim, snorkel and do all these things regardless of what I look like. And if I’m picking stuff up off the beach, the animals I’m protecting don’t care either.”
