‘We were already here, in a way, as the new house sits in what was part of the garden of our old house, where we lived for 13 years and which still stands next door,’ says Mia. ‘There was just a sandpit, a climbing frame and this open vista of Hollywood and beyond. We were always in love with the view because it feels like we’re soaring with the hawks as they fly by. That’s where our sitting room is now.’
Having chosen the perfect spot in their garden, Brian and Mia turned to Kristen, who had worked with them on the design of their loft apartment in New York. The Canadian-born architect had since relocated to Seattle, Washington, taking up a position at architectural firm Olson Kundig. When the couple approached her, Kristen took the opportunity to co-found her own practice, Mutuus Studio, with the blessing of her mentor Tom Kundig.
