All roads lead to bespoke kitchen company Peden & Pringle - or so it seemed to the new owners of a late Victorian house in Edinburgh. 'We had designed a kitchen for not one, but two, of their close relatives and then we were also recommended by their architect,' recalls director Camilla Pringle. 'When it came to replacing the 30-year-old kitchen inherited with the house, they contacted us at the beginning of the project.

The electric five-oven Aga has four heat settings for enhanced efficiency, plus boiling and simmering plates

As part of a plan to refurbish the entire ground floor of the house, the couple put a new kitchen high on their list of priorities. The existing space was small, dated and designed for cooking only,' explains Camilla. 'They wanted to replace it with a larger, open-plan room with enough space to become the family hub of their home. The first step was to remove internal walls, thereby opening up the kitchen to the adjacent dining and living rooms. They also moved the utility room from the back to the side of the kitchen. This created a large square kitchen space with sufficient room for a generously sized island in the heart of the layout.
