These hips and those I&rsquo;ll allow to develop on other roses will help to harden up the plants for the winter and provide food for the birds during the cold months until spring returns.Start tying in your climbers to keep them from being broken by autumn winds and winter gales. It will also get them in position for next year and make pruning easier. The once-flowering ramblers like &lsquo;Albertine&rsquo; should be pruned now. Do this by cutting out the old stems which have bloomed this year. This year&rsquo;s new shoots will grow and produce a wonderful display in 2019.I find it interesting that Kordes Rosen, the German rose breeding firm, is growing its roses organically. In 2015/16 it grew 10,000 plants in a separate field and used only biological protection and no chemical pesticides.In 2016/17 it increased this to 50,000 and this year all its commercial crop has been grown without any chemical pesticides and is 100 per cent biodegradable. Next year it will receive its organic certificate. The plants will probably be a little smaller but much tougher.
