One of Britain&rsquo;s largest and oldest walled gardens has launched a campaign to encourage more florists to buy local when purchasing blooms for their businesses.Gordon Castle Walled Garden in Fochabers, near Elgin, currently grows more than 50 varieties of flowers for cutting from seed through its four colour-themed beds in the historic eight-acre site.The Flowers For The Future campaign, aimed at Scottish florists, is building on the success of Flowers from the Farm (www.flowersfromthe farm.co.uk), a co-operative initiative set up in 2011 to raise the public profile of English growers, which scored considerable success with exhibits at Chelsea and Hampton Court flower shows.Currently, more than 70 per cent of cut flowers are imported from the Netherlands. &ldquo;The most important thing is that we join forces and all work together. If florists and event organisers realise there&rsquo;s a viable alternative, then even small regular orders will make a difference and start the change to a more sustainable and eco-friendly industry,&rdquo; said garden co-owner Zara Gordon Lennox. The project will begin as a Facebook group, but hopes to stage regular meetings for those involved.The Walled Garden at Gordon Castle is now almost complete after restoration began in 2011. The early 19th century structurefell into disrepair in the 1980s. Re-envisioned by designer Arne Maynard, the enormous productive garden will have 450 stepover apples, along with 250 wall-trained fruit trees, including apricots.A 150m (492ft) long cherry orchard, composed of ornamental and culinary varieties, has also been planted, along with Scottish varieties of apples set among contemporary sculptured turf features.
