This was a career highlight after working in many departments with some of the best horticulturists, visiting famous gardens on their east coast and making friends from all over the world.The plant that made me work hardest The Titan arum from Sumatra is a very rare plant and when it flowers it smells of rotten meat! It can sometimes take 10 years to flower and requires specific temperatures, regular feeding and repotting to keep it alive. I loved the challenge of growing one while working at St Andrews Botanic Garden at Fife in Scotland.The plants I would love to grow more of The heavenly species and numerous varieties of the Himalayan poppy, meconopsis. Many have blue flowers in tones that are truly breathtaking.The plant I would always give away as a gift Statuesque Verbena bonariensis, which is much loved by pollinators, usefully creates a &lsquo;transparent veil&rsquo; in your borders. It&rsquo;s really easy to grow from seed and cuttings, which makes it perfect for sharing with friends.
