The garden is really delightful just now. The dahlias are blazing away, creating rivulets of colour with the later sowing of cosmos and a rather good helenium &lsquo;Can Can&rsquo;. Yet, much as I&rsquo;m enjoying it, it&rsquo;s starting to get thin.It&rsquo;s that cold wind blowing thing. The annuals are fading and one frost from now and it&rsquo;ll be a very different picture. But my autumn policy when it comes to garden design is to think about late May and then work backwards.I&rsquo;ve a robust approach to bulbs: more is more. Each is a magic nugget of floral joy, spring just waiting to happen. Unfortunately, bulbs are the last thing that should be added to a design or you risk constantly digging the poor things up or putting a spade through them. So, lots and lots of pots is the way forward. I poke dwarf narcissus in around evergreens such as clipped box, and I like to overplant bulbs with interim interest: no space must be wasted or it&rsquo;ll be a boring old view until spring. A particularly favourite combination is Ophiopogon planiscapus &lsquo;Nigrescens&rsquo; (black mondo) teamed with a violet or lilac viola. With white or mauve bulbs, such as common snowdrops or Crocus sieberi &lsquo;Firefly&rsquo; or &lsquo;Spring Beauty&rsquo;, this looks just fabulous. I&rsquo;ll also use ferns, grasses and small, cheap evergreens with Narcissus poeticus and &lsquo;Actaea&rsquo;, &lsquo;Sinopel&rsquo; and &lsquo;Bantam&rsquo; (www.dejager.co.uk).Tulips are always awesome grouped in large pots for big hits of colour. &lsquo;Couleur Cardinal&rsquo; and &lsquo;Pieter de Leur&rsquo; (www.suttons. co.uk) were wonderful last year and now I&rsquo;ve got a pink and plum theme which includes &lsquo;National Velvet&rsquo; and &lsquo;Rems Favourite&rsquo; (www.mr-fothergills.co.uk), plus &lsquo;Uncle Tom&rsquo; and &lsquo;Holland Chic&rsquo; (www.dejager.co.uk).When choosing bulbs ensure they&rsquo;re firm and undamaged, with no sign of rot or mildew. Unhealthy bulbs won&rsquo;t perform as they should and can introduce disease into the garden. Look out for them at garden centres; if necessary, contact customer services for mail-order replacements.It&rsquo;s a seasonal ritual: no matter how dreary the weather, or how busy I am, in the bulbs go. And the fizz of pleasure when they shine through the windows on dark spring mornings makes it worth it every time.
