For a show that will be judged on a Sunday morning, I start selecting the blooms I&rsquo;m going to present on&nbsp;the Friday. The first thing I do is make sure all&nbsp;plants&nbsp;are well watered. Then I start selecting blooms. It takes a little experience to know the correct stage of flower that will fully mature in two days&rsquo; time. If you select blooms that look great on&nbsp;the Friday, they&rsquo;ll be past their best by judging time on Sunday. At the same time, I also remove any fading flowers that I see and the odd&nbsp;side shoots&nbsp;that may have been missed.On Saturday morning I cut all the flowers I&rsquo;ve selected and&nbsp;get&nbsp;them in water before the sun gets any strength to it. Cutting flowers in full sun can cause them to collapse as they can&rsquo;t take up enough water to keep fresh. As the flowers go into the water I pierce the stems underwater and twist the knife to let out any trapped air in the hollow stem. Once the drums are full with cut&nbsp;flowers&nbsp;I then put them somewhere out of the sun, which often is in the house and they can fill the lounge, dining&nbsp;and&nbsp;bathroom. The kitchen is left clear for sorting the flowers out and making coffee!You can then start sorting the flowers into sets for the vases. By doing this prior to the show you don&rsquo;t end up taking more flowers of any variety than you can use and you save time sorting them at the show.
