Autumn&rsquo;s a busy time for squirrels. There&rsquo;s lots to eat, but it&rsquo;s also time to prepare for a hungrier future. And both grey and red squirrels are great little operators when it comes to winter survival. Trips outside are kept to a minimum. Dreys are football-sized bundles of twigs. Inside there&rsquo;s a lining of dry grass, moss and feathers.When they&rsquo;re out on winter days, squirrels need to be able to find high-energy food as quickly as they can, so they mostly rely on nuts and other tree seeds.And this year looks as though it&rsquo;s a good one, with heavy crops of both. The crop produced by deciduous trees &ndash; acorns, beech mast, hazelnuts and ash seed &ndash; is falling now. And, of course, urban and suburban squirrels have a third option. Feeders full of peanuts are hard to resist.When winter does throw its worst their way, a squirrel doesn&rsquo;t want to spend too long out and about. Not only is it likely to get chilled and wet, but there&rsquo;s also a chance of becoming somebody else&rsquo;s meal.So, winter survival is all about collecting, and squirreling away, autumn&rsquo;s food surplus now. That&rsquo;s a serious business; it has been estimated that red squirrels spend 33 hours each autumn stocking a winter larder. All those hours should mean that a squirrel has a store that could see it through a couple of months. To hide that away in one place would be too risky, so single titbits are buried here and there.When the time comes the little food caches are found by its owner using its well-tuned sense of smell (rather than memory). Clearly, there&rsquo;s room for occasional errors, which may explain the oak seedling that appeared this summer right in the middle of my lawn!
