The prospect of urban trees being given more protection, with locals being consulted on council decision-making, is being considered under new Government plans.The proposals would make sure authorities are prevented from felling any trees without first consulting the communities affected.The proposed measures are an acknowledgement of the important role trees in towns and cities play in improving health and well-being, as well as providing crucial environmental benefits.The proposals include: - Ensuring communities have a say on whether street trees should be felled. - A requirement for local councils to report on tree felling and replanting. - Giving the Forestry Commission the power to tackle illegal tree felling and protect wooded landscapes.&ldquo;It&rsquo;s right that the views of local people are at the heart of any decision that affects their community &ndash; and the futures of the trees that line their streets are no different,&rdquo; said Environment Secretary Michael Gove.The consultation process closes on February 28.
