When a designer designs their own home, you know you are in for a sensorial treat. Reflective of just that, this 2,000sqft home in Ghatkopar West, Mumbai, is an indulgence. Dority Matlani of the eponymous design firm has poured her heart into the making of her dream home that she shares with her family. From the concept, execution and finessing…her home is a lesson on finding the balance between opulence and understated design.
I normally create a 3D design, based on which I select materials, followed by execution. In the case of the living room, it was a surprise till the end...the designs were in my mind. The contractors did what they were told. It was a gamble as the living room is the main room of any home. It was difficult initially to convince my family, but they finally agreed and now love how it has turned out.
— Dority Matlani, Founder, Dority Design Studio
When Dority mentioned her home is inspired by Roman architecture the first thought that popped into our minds was columns and intricate baroque carvings. Instead, we find an elegant scape made up of modern colours and forms in the pleasant and toned-down company of quintessential Greek design elements. “My love for Roman architecture knows no bounds. I literally watch series just to look at the architecture and interiors. I was very clear with the theme of our house right from the beginning. I envisioned a space with characteristic features of Roman architecture,” says the interior designer.
