Originally from Limerick, landscape photographer Norman McCloskey was only 20 when he took a trip to Kerry for a few days in 1992. He immediately fell in love with the place, captivated by the beauty of the landscape, which inspired him to borrow a friend’s camera and make his first landscape images.
‘I had never thought of picking up a camera and taking pictures before this. Nor had I been an outdoorsy person. However, I spent a day walking around the hills and taking snaps, and just like that my passion was ignited,’ Norman recalls.
From this point, Norman decided to teach himself more about photography, pre-internet days, through amateur photography magazines. ‘These magazines are more for hobbyists, so I decided to enroll at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT). Once I graduated, I worked as an assistant with a commercial photographer before moving on to an agency that specialised in sports photography, ending up as commercial manager before leaving in 2015.’ Norman published his first book called ‘PARKLIGHT’ in 2013. This was a focus on the landscapes of Killarney National Park and was hugely successful. Not only was it awarded second place at the International Photography Awards book category in 2014, but it remains the only photography book published on Ireland’s premier national park.
