While the emotional reaction to an artwork can be an easy sell and the most vital aspect, buying art involves a few more considerations than just the win of the heart. Rounding up advice from the experts, we share what you need to know when buying artwork.
DESIGNER'S WORD
Carefully selected art can transform a space and infuse it with personality, says interior designer and owner of LVN Interiors Leanne Van Niekerk. When searching for the perfect art piece, Van Niekerk recommends designing a room with wall art in mind. She says: "Artwork sets the tone for the look and feel of a room; it gives you a focal point and colour palette with which to work. Without art, a space won't feel complete. Choose art to suit a particular space. When choosing art for a room, think about ceiling height, colour schemes, and lighting. Also, consider your walls: are they painted or wallpapered? If you have a wallpaper that's textured or busy, then pick an artwork that's toned down or frame the piece boldly to draw attention to it. If your walls are painted, you can go for more intricate, detailed artwork that offers an interesting contrast."
