Travel diaries are filled with happy memories, experiences, and visuals that leave a lasting impression on our minds. I like to believe these visuals get added to our subconscious database to be retrieved at a later point and time. On my last trip to Germany, I had the privilege of visiting the new addition to the German Historical Museum in Berlin designed by architect I M Pei. A relatively small building, the structure is pure poetry in stone, glass, and metal. While the building is more renowned for its all-glass spiral staircase overlooking the plaza, I was particularly fascinated by a railing detail that I chanced upon. Scooped out of the limestone finished wall running along the basement stairs I couldn’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship at play. The subtlety of design seeking a fine balance between function and aesthetic was such a visual delight. What was also striking was the play of proportions to take a small idea and give it a sense of public scale. It was only until many years later that we saw this visual finding fruition in one of our projects.
