Crystalline Gardens

Yogendra Joshi finds great joy in sharing all that he learns. Here, he speaks to us about his experiments with photographing crystals through polarised light.

Since its invention, polarised light microscopy has helped identify numerous substances in biological research and forensic science. Many photographers have used this method to create fantastical macro images, and there is a wealth of knowledge today that is making this form of image-making more accessible to those who are keen to explore.

My Perspective

Last year, I came across some mesmerising images submitted to a microscope photography competition and wanted to capture similar patterns and intense colours. In January this year, I began to pursue this project in earnest. When I first started, I had very little idea of what I was doing, but decided to just keep experimenting until I was satisfied with the results.

Duration

I began making these pictures in January 2020, and intend to continue for the foreseeable future.

Notes

There are a variety of combinations one can use to achieve such photographs. I particularly like to come up with offbeat and inexpensive methods to make it more accessable for macro enthusiasts.
