This week it’s Hungary.
CELTIC Football Club is a name known throughout the football world, while in just about any country you care to mention, you’re guaranteed to find Celtic supporters proudly wearing the green and white Hoops.
And as well as having universal appeal, the Celtic first-team squad has a global look to it, with players from 13 countries playing their part in the historic success the club has enjoyed in recent seasons.
Over the course of this season we’ll be taking a closer look at these countries and their current Celtic links, as well as other nations who have played their part in our unique story.
AND IF YOU KNOW THE HISTORY
Celtic first travelled to what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1904 but never ventured into what is now Hungary as they played three games in Austria before travelling over the border to what would soon become Czechoslovakia. There were further trips to Central Europe in 1906 and 1907 before the 1911 tour finally included a game on Hungarian soil. Budapest was the port of call and Ferencvarosi Torna Club awaited. Ferencvaros were currently in the midst of five successive Hungarian championships while Celtic had just recently finished six-in-a-row, and it was honours even when the game finished 1-1.
