CELTIC Football Club is a name known throughout the football world, while in just about any country you care to mention, you’re guaranteed to find Celtic supporters proudly wearing the green and white Hoops.
And as well as having universal appeal, the Celtic first-team squad has a global look to it, with players from 13 countries playing their part in the historic success the club has enjoyed in recent seasons.
Over the course of this season we’ll be taking a closer look at these countries and their current Celtic links, as well as other nations who have played their part in our unique story.
This week it’s The Netherlands …
AND IF YOU KNOW THE HISTORY
Nestled away in the heart of the quaint Dutch town of Deventer sits the Adelaarshorst Stadium. Home of Go Ahead Eagles, this was the venue for Celtic’s first visit to Holland for a European Cup-Winners’ Cup match in September 1965. The match saw Celtic rack up a 6-0 win in front of 25,000 fans, which remains a record attendance for that stadium.
Celtic’s goals came from Bobby Lennox (3), Jimmy Johnstone (2) and John Hughes, as the rampant Hoops completely outplayed the hapless Dutch side. In the return leg, a young full-back by the name of Jim Craig made his Celtic debut as Joe McBride’s goal secured a 7-0 aggregate win. Celtic reached the semi-final of the tournament, but Liverpool edged them out.
