This week we have John McPhail…

FIRST GOAL, LEAGUE,

AUGUST 27, 1947

CELTIC 4-0 QUEEN’S PARK

John McPhail had already scored 13 goals in 131 Wartime games for Celtic but his first post-war season was a washout through serious illness and a spell in Ruchill Hospital. He returned for the final three games of that season and was made captain at the start of the following term and got off the mark in the second league game. Queen’s Park were the visitors and by the 25th minute it was 3-0, with McPhail netting the third. Johnny Paton had opened the scoring in the 10th minute and Joe Rae scored the second just a minute before McPhail hit the net. Just six minutes from time, Bobby Evans made it 4-0. McPhail was playing in defence at that point and moved further forward to midfield the following term before moving to centre-forward near the end of the 1949/50 season – and that’s when the goals really started to flow.
