Mayflower 400: Legand and Legacy
The Westcountry’s biggest museum project in years is now open, after postponing the original date in May due to the coronavirus restrictions.
The £40 million The Box is the largest multi-disciplinary arts and heritage space to open in the UK in 2020 and has been transformed and extended from three separate buildings to create a cutting-edge, interactive cultural centre with 13 galleries and exhibition spaces, an elevated archive, learning and research facilities and a brand new public square.
Admission is free, but you need to book in advance. There’s a one-way system in key areas and face coverings are encouraged for those aged over 11.
The Box opens with three major exhibitions: Mayflower 400: Legend andLegacy, is the largest commemorative Mayflower exhibition in history, will include over 300 objects and has been co-curated with the Wampanoag Native American Advisory Committee.
Making It is an international contemporary art exhibition featuring newly commissioned works by Antony Gormley (creator of LOOK II – a twicelifesize anthromorphic figure cast in 22 iron blocks which will stand on the city’s West Hoe Pier, looking out to sea), Portuguese artist Leonor Antunes and Brazilian artist Alexandre da Cunha.
Kehinde Wiley: Ship of Fools has been curated with The Arts Institute at the University of Plymouth and Royal Museums Greenwich, and present a three-channel film work by American artist Kehinde Wiley.
