Money is an important aspect of a relationship because of the expectations that come with it and the way it dictates to what your limitations are as a couple.
So naturally, having a mutual understanding about money is crucial for not letting financial issues get in the way of your bond. It’s not unusual for couples in a serious relationship nowadays to manage their finances together. While in some cases, couples maintain complete financial independence but for so many other couples, money becomes a more vaguely joint effort as the relationship moves forward. Money adds to a relationship intensely; it can either be harshly destructive for a relationship or it can make it more compatible.
Balanced Relationships
Partners should always be equal and that means different things to different people. For some people ‘equal’ means exact 50/50 split in finances but often that’s not practically possible for a couple. What if both of them don’t make the same amount of money? Money can become important when one of the partners can’t keep up with the other financially. Knowing exactly what both partners are expected to contribute to a relationship is crucially important so no one ends up feeling out of their depth.
Maintain Financial Independence
While two people are in a relationship, it’s a good idea for both of them to agree that each person has some of his or her own unrestricted section of finances to spend on whatever they want; be it a regular manicure, shopping, a great bottle of wine or a fancy electronic gadget. The point is- being in a relationship doesn’t mean you can’t occasionally feed your personal indulgences. The key is to agree on the amount of discretionary money you both have and spend it accordingly. This helps the couple to have a sense of individuality while being in a relationship which makes it strong and stable.
